My Working Day
Prep 1 for the examination "Describe Your Working Day". This is the one that counts. You describe a working day in your future job. First you write, then you talk.
What you do
- Write a text, 150–200 words. You write it here in class.
- Talk about your day for about 2 minutes, in a small group at the teacher's table. Do not read your text out loud.
- Make a card with max 10 words. You can look at it when you talk.
Task
Describe a working day in your future profession. Use both concrete words (tools, places, tasks) and concepts (like safety, responsibility, teamwork) that we have worked with in class. Structure your text in chronological order, from the start of the day to the end.
Tips
- Start with an introduction: who you are and what your job is.
- Use time expressions: first, then, after that, before lunch, later in the afternoon, at the end of the day.
- Include at least 4 concrete words and 3 concepts from your word list.
- End with a short reflection: what part of the day did you like, and why?
What your teacher looks at
- Words. Do you use words from your job?
- Order and time words. Is the day in the right order?
- Language. Is it clear and easy to follow?
- Content. Do you explain why things are important?
Rule about the examples
Your day must have different tasks than the day in the example. You can borrow the words. The day must be your own.

Two example texts. Same day, two levels.
Read both texts. Find the time words (first, then, after that …). Find the job words. Then look at Level C: which sentences explain why?
Level E
My name is Alex. I am an apprentice electrician. I work for a small company. My working day starts at 7 o'clock. First, I check my toolbox. I have a multimeter, a screwdriver and some cable. Then, I talk to my supervisor about the jobs for the day. Safety is very important in my job. I always check the voltage before I start.
After that, I work on a fuse box. Sometimes I fix a socket. I must work with precision. Before lunch, we take a short break. After lunch, I do troubleshooting. I look for the problem and I try to fix it. It is hard sometimes, but I learn new things every day.
Later in the afternoon, I write a short report about my work. This is my responsibility. At the end of the day, I clean my tools. Then I talk to the team about tomorrow. I like teamwork, because we help each other.
Level C
My name is Alex, and I'm an apprentice electrician. My working day usually starts at 7 a.m., when I check my toolbox and make sure I have everything I need: a multimeter, a screwdriver, and some cable. First, we go through the day's jobs with my supervisor. Safety always comes first, so before I touch anything, I check the voltage to make sure the circuit is not live.
After that, I usually spend the morning wiring a new fuse box or fixing a socket that isn't working. It takes precision, because a small mistake can actually be dangerous. Around noon, we take a short break before continuing with the afternoon's tasks, which are often more about troubleshooting. That means figuring out why something isn't working the way it should.
Later in the afternoon, I write a short report about what I've done, which teaches me responsibility, since other electricians need to be able to trust my notes. At the end of the day, I clean up my tools and go through tomorrow's plan with the team. I really like the moments when teamwork actually solves a problem. It feels like we've done something that matters.
Level E
My name is Sam. I am an apprentice carpenter. I work on a building site. My working day starts at 6.30. First, I put on my hard hat and my safety boots. Then, I look at the drawing with my supervisor. Safety is very important on a building site. We always check the scaffolding before we go up.
After that, I measure the wall with a tape measure. I use a spirit level too. I must work with precision. Before lunch, we put up plasterboard. After lunch, we put insulation in the walls. It is heavy work, but I learn new things every day.
Later in the afternoon, I help my team to carry beams. We have a routine for this. At the end of the day, I clean the site and put the tools away. This is my responsibility. I like teamwork, because the job is easier when we help each other.
Level C
My name is Sam, and I'm an apprentice carpenter on a building site. My working day starts at 6.30, when I put on my hard hat and safety boots. First, we go through the drawing with our supervisor, so everyone knows what to do. Safety always comes first on a site, so before anyone goes up, we check that the scaffolding is safe.
After that, I usually spend the morning measuring and putting up plasterboard. I use a tape measure and a spirit level all the time, because a wall that is only a little bit wrong will cause problems later. It takes precision. Before lunch, we clean up our area, which is part of our routine.
Later in the afternoon, we often put insulation in the walls or carry beams for the next day. When something doesn't fit, we have to stop and think, and I like that kind of problem-solving. At the end of the day, I put the tools away and check that the site is safe. That is my responsibility, since other people will work there tomorrow. The best part of the day is the teamwork, because nobody can build a house alone.
Level E
My name is Kim. I am an apprentice plumber. I work for a small company. My working day starts at 7 o'clock. First, I check the van. I need pipes, valves and my tools. Then, I talk to my supervisor about the jobs for the day. Safety is very important in my job. I always turn off the water before I start.
After that, we go to a customer. Sometimes there is a leak under the sink. I look at the pipe and I change the seal. I must work with precision. Before lunch, I fix a tap in a kitchen. After lunch, we check a radiator. It is cold, so we look for the problem.
Later in the afternoon, I test the water pressure. Then I write a short report. This is my responsibility. At the end of the day, I clean my tools and the van. I like problem-solving, because every job is different.
Level C
My name is Kim, and I'm an apprentice plumber. My working day usually starts at 7 a.m., when I check that the van has everything we need: pipes, valves, seals and my tools. First, my supervisor and I go through the day's jobs. Safety always comes first, so before I start any job, I turn off the water supply.
After that, we usually drive to a customer. A common job is a leak under a sink. I check the pipe carefully and change the seal, which takes precision, because even a small leak can cause water damage over time. Before lunch, I often fix a tap or clean a drain.
Later in the afternoon, the jobs are more about problem-solving. For example, if a radiator is cold, we have to find out why before we can fix it. When the job is done, I test the water pressure and write a short report. That is my responsibility, since the customer must be able to trust our work. At the end of the day, I clean the van and plan tomorrow with the team. I like the teamwork, because my supervisor explains things while we work.
Level E
My name is Robin. I am a childcare assistant. I work at a preschool. The children are one to five years old. My working day starts at 7 o'clock. First, I say hello to the children and the parents. Then, we have circle time. We sing a song and talk about the day. Routine is very important for small children.
After that, we go out to the playground. Safety is important, so I always watch the children when they play. Before lunch, we have an activity. Sometimes we paint or build with toys. After lunch, the small children rest. I read a book to them.
Later in the afternoon, we have snack time. Then the children play again. Inclusion is important, so everyone can join the play. At the end of the day, I talk to the parents about the day. This is my responsibility. I like teamwork, because my colleagues and I help each other.
Level C
My name is Robin, and I'm a childcare assistant at a preschool. My working day starts at 7 a.m., when the first children arrive. First, I say hello to every child and parent, because a good start makes the children feel safe. Then we have circle time, where we sing and talk about what will happen today. Routine matters for small children, since they feel calm when they know what comes next.
After that, we go out to the playground. Safety always comes first, so we count the children before we go. Before lunch, we have an activity, like painting or building with toys. I try to think about inclusion, which means that every child can join in, not only the loudest ones.
Later in the afternoon, after snack time, there is sometimes a conflict between two children. Then I have to stay calm and help them find a solution, and I like that kind of problem-solving. At the end of the day, I tell the parents about their child's day. That is my responsibility, since they must be able to trust us. The best part of my job is the teamwork, because my colleagues and I help each other.
