1. Vocabulary
These are the core words you need for work in construction. Learn them
well before you move on to the reading and writing sections below, since
the exercises there use this vocabulary.

Multiple choice
1
"Betong" means...
concrete — "betong" is the material you pour into a mould and let harden.
Fill in the blank
2
Before you can pour concrete, the workers must first put the ______
in place so the concrete is strong enough. (armering)
reinforcement (or "rebar") — steel bars that give concrete extra strength.
Fill in the blank
3
You must always wear a ______ on a construction site to protect
your head. (skyddshjälm)
hard hat (or "safety helmet") — required on almost every construction site.
Fill in the blank
1
The site manager checked the platform with a ______ to make sure it
was completely flat before work continued.
spirit level — a tool that shows whether a surface is exactly horizontal.
Choose & explain
2
Choose the correct word for each gap: "A ______ runs vertically
inside a wall to support drywall, while a ______ runs horizontally
to support a floor or roof." (stud / beam)
A stud runs vertically inside a wall; a beam runs horizontally to support a floor or roof.
Write
3
Write two sentences describing the steps for putting up scaffolding
safely.
Example: First we check the drawing to see where the scaffolding should go. Then we assemble it carefully and check every platform with a spirit level before anyone climbs up.
Explain
1
Explain the difference between a load-bearing wall and a regular
(non-load-bearing) wall, and why the difference matters on a
construction site.
A load-bearing wall carries the weight of the structure above it, including floors and the roof. A regular wall only divides space. Removing or damaging a load-bearing wall without proper support can cause the building to become unstable or collapse.
Scenario
2
A colleague wants to add an extra platform to existing scaffolding
to save time. Using vocabulary from this list, write what you would
say to them.
Example: Any change to scaffolding, even a small one, needs a new inspection before anyone works on it. Adding a platform changes the load, and the structure might not be designed for the extra weight and wind pressure.
2. Reading
Choose the level that fits you. Each level has its own text and
questions about the construction trade.
Construction Worker Wanted
Nordbygg AB needs a new construction worker for a house-building
project. Your tasks: help set up scaffolding, carry materials, and
assist with basic concrete work.
Requirements: you must always wear a hard hat on site. You need to be
able to read a simple drawing.
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 16:00. Contact:
jobs@nordbygg.se.
Adapted text for Foundation level.
Multiple choice
1
What must the worker be able to read?
a simple drawing — the ad asks for the ability to read a simple drawing.
Comprehension
2
What must you always wear on site, according to the ad?
A hard hat.
Comprehension
3
What are the working hours, according to the ad?
Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 16:00.
Working at Height: Scaffolding Safety
Scaffolding work is one of the most dangerous parts of a
construction site, and most accidents happen because of small
mistakes that could have been avoided. Before you climb any
scaffolding, check that it has been properly inspected and that all
locking pins are in place.
Never carry heavy materials up a ladder attached to scaffolding; use
a hoist or ask a colleague to help. Always use a spirit level to
confirm that platforms are level, not just by eye. If a load-bearing
wall is nearby, keep a safe distance until the site manager confirms
it is stable.
Weather matters too: strong wind can make scaffolding unsafe, and
work should stop if wind speeds pass the limit set by the site
manager. Reporting problems immediately, even small ones, is part of
everyone's job on site.
Written as course material.
Multiple choice
1
What should you use to confirm that a platform is level?
a spirit level — the text says to confirm platforms are level, not just by eye.
Comprehension
2
According to the text, why do most scaffolding accidents happen?
Because of small mistakes that could have been avoided.
Comprehension
3
What should happen if wind speeds pass the limit set by the site
manager?
Work should stop.
Incident Report: Scaffolding Collapse
Last month, a section of scaffolding at a renovation site partially
collapsed during high winds. No one was seriously injured, but two
workers were on the platform when it happened and had to be
rescued.
The investigation found that the scaffolding had passed its initial
inspection, but a modification made three days earlier, adding an
extra platform to speed up plastering work, had not been
re-inspected. The extra weight, combined with wind loads the
structure was not designed for, caused the failure.
The site manager has since introduced a rule: any modification to
scaffolding, however small, requires a new inspection before anyone
is allowed back on it. Workers have also been reminded that their
responsibility does not end when scaffolding passes its first
inspection; conditions and structures change, and safety checks must
keep up.
This incident is a reminder that construction sites are dynamic
environments. A structure that was safe yesterday is not
automatically safe today.
Written as course material.
Inference
1
What was the real root cause of the collapse, according to the
investigation, not just the wind?
An unauthorised modification, an extra platform added to speed up plastering work, had not been re-inspected before the wind exposed that it added weight the structure was not designed to carry.
Comprehension
2
What new rule did the site manager introduce after the incident?
Any modification to scaffolding, however small, requires a new inspection before anyone is allowed back on it.
Extended answer
3
The text says a structure that was safe yesterday is not
automatically safe today. Explain in your own words why this
matters for construction workers specifically, using the incident
report as an example.
Construction sites keep changing: materials get added, weather changes, and small modifications happen daily. The scaffolding in the report passed its first inspection, but a later change made it unsafe, showing that safety is not a one-time check but something that must be reconfirmed whenever conditions change.
3. Writing
Guided writing
1
Write about a future job in construction. Use these sentence
starters: "I want to work in construction because...",
"A typical day on a building site includes...",
"The most important safety rule is..."
There is no single correct answer. Check that you used at least two words from the vocabulary list and that each sentence has a subject before the verb.
Paragraph writing
1
Write a short paragraph (5-8 sentences) describing a typical
construction task, from start to finish. Use at least four words
from the vocabulary list.
There is no single correct answer. Check that your paragraph has a clear order (first, then, finally) and that you used at least four vocabulary words correctly.
Extended writing
1
Imagine you are training a new worker on their first day. Write
instructions (150+ words) explaining the most important scaffolding
safety rules and how to avoid the kind of incident described in the
Challenge reading text.
There is no single correct answer. Check that you cover at least three concrete safety rules, that you refer to the incident report, and that your instructions are written directly to the new worker (imperative or "you" form).
