Multiple choice

1 "Säkring" means...

Fill in the blank

2 The wires must be properly ______ so no one gets an electric shock. (isolerade)

Fill in the blank

3 Before you touch any wires, always check the ______ first to make sure the power is off. (säkringsskåpet)

Fill in the blank

1 The electrician used a ______ to check whether the circuit still had power after switching off the fuse.

Choose & explain

2 "Always make sure the appliance is properly ______ before you connect it in a wet area." Choose between insulated and earthed, and explain the difference between the two words.

Write

3 Write two sentences describing how you would troubleshoot a fuse box that keeps tripping.

Explain

1 Explain the difference between a short circuit and simply a blown fuse, in your own words, using vocabulary from this section.

Scenario

2 A customer says: "The socket doesn't work, but the light in the same room works fine." Write two possible causes, using vocabulary from this list.

2. Reading

Choose the level that fits you. Each level has its own text and questions about the electrical trade.

Apprentice Electrician Wanted

ABC Elektro is looking for an apprentice electrician. You will work with an experienced electrician every day. Your tasks: install wiring in new houses, check fuse boxes, and learn to read a wiring diagram.

Requirements: you must wear protective equipment at all times. You must be careful and follow safety rules.

Start date: as soon as possible. Send your application to jobs@abcelektro.se.

Adapted text for Foundation level.

Multiple choice

1 What will the apprentice learn to read?

Working with Electricity: Basic Safety Rules

Before you start any electrical work, always switch off the current at the fuse box. Never assume a wire is safe just because it looks disconnected. Check it with a multimeter first. A short circuit can happen in a fraction of a second and cause a fire or a serious injury.

All electricians must wear protective equipment, including insulated gloves and safety glasses, when working near live circuits. If you are unsure whether a socket or switch is earthed correctly, stop and ask a supervisor. Guessing is never acceptable in this trade.

When you finish a job, always double-check your work against the wiring diagram. A small mistake in the fuse box can affect an entire building. Troubleshooting takes patience: work step by step, and never skip a step just to save time.

Written as course material.

Multiple choice

2 According to the text, what can happen in a fraction of a second if there is a short circuit?

Incident Report: Unexpected Power Loss

On Tuesday, an apprentice was asked to replace a faulty socket in an office building. He switched off the relevant fuse in what he believed was the correct fuse box, but the building had two separate fuse boxes serving different floors, and the wiring diagram he used was outdated.

When he began working, the socket was still live. He received a mild shock but was wearing insulated gloves, which prevented serious injury. Work stopped immediately, and a senior electrician was called to the site.

The investigation found that the wiring diagram had not been updated after renovation work two years earlier. The company has now introduced a new rule: no apprentice may begin work on a fuse box without a supervisor confirming that the current wiring diagram matches the actual installation.

This incident illustrates a wider issue in the trade: documentation is only useful if it is kept up to date. Even experienced electricians can be caught out by outdated records, which is why isolation should always be confirmed with a multimeter, never assumed from a diagram alone.

Written as course material.

Inference

1 What was the real root cause of the incident, according to the investigation, not just what the apprentice did wrong?

Comprehension

2 What new company rule was introduced after the incident?

Extended answer

3 The text says "documentation is only useful if it is kept up to date." Explain in your own words why this matters for electricians specifically, using an example from the text.

3. Writing

Guided writing

1 Write about a future job in the electrical trade. Use these sentence starters: "I want to work as a...", "A typical day includes...", "The most important safety rule is..."

Paragraph writing

1 Write a short paragraph (5-8 sentences) describing a typical work task for an electrician, from start to finish. Use at least four words from the vocabulary list.

Extended writing

1 Imagine you are training a new apprentice on their first day. Write instructions (150+ words) explaining the most important safety rules and how to avoid the kind of incident described in the Challenge reading text.
