Multiple choice

1 "Läcka" means...

Fill in the blank

2 Before you repair a pipe, you must find where the ______ is coming from. (läckan)

Fill in the blank

3 A ______ controls how much water flows through a pipe. (ventil)

Fill in the blank

1 If the ______ in the building is too high, it can cause small leaks to get worse quickly.

Choose & explain

2 Explain the difference between a "tap/faucet" and a "valve" in plumbing, and give an example of where you would find each.

Write

3 Write two sentences describing how you would find the source of a leak before repairing it.

Explain

1 Explain, in your own words, how a small problem like a worn gasket could lead to serious water damage, using the incident report as an example.

Scenario

2 A colleague says a floor drain does not need regular inspection if no one has reported a problem. Using vocabulary from this list, write a response explaining why this is risky.

2. Reading

Choose the level that fits you. Each level has its own text and questions about plumbing and property work.

Plumber's Apprentice Wanted

Söderberg VVS is looking for an apprentice plumber. Your tasks: help install pipes, fit taps, and check for leaks in new and older buildings.

Requirements: you must be careful with tools and follow instructions exactly. Basic knowledge of how a boiler works is a plus but not required.

Working hours: Monday to Friday, full time. Contact: jobb@soderbergvvs.se.

Adapted text for Foundation level.

Finding and Fixing a Leak

When a customer reports a leak, always start by finding the source before you start any repair work. Water can travel a long way from the actual leak before it becomes visible, so check pipes, joints, and any seal or gasket nearby before assuming you have found the problem.

Check the water pressure in the system: unusually high water pressure puts extra strain on pipes and can cause a small leak to become a serious one quickly. If you find water damage on walls or floors, take photos before you start any repair, since this documentation may be needed for insurance.

Never solder a pipe that still has water in it; soldering requires a dry, empty pipe, or the joint will not seal properly. Always test your repair under normal water pressure before you consider the job finished.

Written as course material.

Incident Report: Water Damage in an Apartment Building

Six months ago, a small leak in a riser pipe on the third floor of an apartment building went unreported for several weeks. By the time it was discovered, water had travelled down through two floors, causing significant water damage to ceilings and walls in three separate apartments.

The investigation found that the leak had started at a joint where the gasket had worn out, a common but usually minor issue. The real problem was that a floor drain on the third floor had been partially blocked, so instead of draining away safely, the water accumulated and eventually pushed into the building structure.

The property company has since introduced a rule requiring floor drains in shared areas to be inspected twice a year, not just when a problem is reported. Plumbers were also asked to check that any backflow preventer in the affected pipework was working correctly, since a faulty one could have made the damage worse by allowing dirty water back into the system.

This incident shows how a small, ordinary fault, a worn gasket, can turn into a major and costly problem when it combines with a second, unrelated failure such as a blocked drain.

Written as course material.

Inference

1 What was the real root cause of the water damage, according to the investigation, not just the worn gasket?

Comprehension

2 What new rule did the property company introduce after the incident?

Extended answer

3 The text says a small, ordinary fault can turn into a major problem when it combines with a second, unrelated failure. Explain in your own words why this matters for plumbers specifically, using the incident report as an example.

3. Writing

Guided writing

1 Write about a future job in plumbing or property maintenance. Use these sentence starters: "I want to work with plumbing because...", "A typical repair job includes...", "The most important safety rule is..."

Paragraph writing

1 Write a short paragraph (5-8 sentences) describing a typical plumbing repair task, from start to finish. Use at least four words from the vocabulary list.

Extended writing

1 Imagine you are training a new apprentice on their first day. Write instructions (150+ words) explaining how to properly find and document a leak, referencing the incident report.
